Queen Ebony (Xanthostemon melanoxylon- Myrtacea) also known locally as Tubi

We are currently importing this species into Australia in very limited quantities, and are actively seeking markets for this species both overseas and in Australia. We are promoting this premium hardwood as part of our strategy to give Solomon Islands eco-timber products greater market exposure. It is a unique opportunity not seen very often. Although not recognised (yet) as true ebony such as those from the Diospyros spp. family, this amazing tree produces some the most beautiful jet-black, close-grained and heavy hardwoods known to man. It is so hard in fact, we have purchased some very expensive titanium-alloy cutting blades in order to resize some of the bigger pieces!

This particular timber is virtually an unknown species in the wider timber industry, which is surprising when considering the popularity of conventional ebony in the worldwide market. We feel that artisans, luthiers, wood-wind makers and woodturning enthusiasts will find this species most interesting; mostly due to its hard-wearing and durable structure, beautiful colour, and fine tonal qualities. Many of the finest traditional wood-carvings in the Solomon Islands are made from it.

In conclusion, Queen Ebony is sure to deserve global recognition as a true natural treasure of the forests of the Solomon Islands.

The scientific data and samples of this species are currently available; please contact Sitco Australia’s Liason Officer.
