PNG Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus Meliaceae) also known locally as Narra or Rose Mahogany

This well-known and respected hardwood has been regarded as a mainstay of the asian cabinetry and furniture industry for many years. The burl of the tree, widely known as Amboyna, has been used for highly-decorative veneers and premium woodwork for many years. This attractive hardwood is simple to carve, turn, or nail. This species has been targeted by logging companies for mass-export and the results, so far, have been devastating. We believe it is essential for buyers to only acquire this species from reputable and certified sources.

The timber itself can vary in colour from golden-brown through blood-red, some rarer pieces are purplish-black or dark-brown with black lines through the grain. It is an incredibly beautiful hardwood that is highly fragrant, and when freshly cut, leeches a fluorescent-blue tannin on exposure to water. The tonal qualities of Narra have been likened to Hawaiian Koa; many luthiers are now using Narra to produce unique and beautiful guitars. Ease of use, visual beauty, durability and tonal quality are what makes Narra an outstanding choice for any special project.
